Insurance for New Jersey Snow & Ice Contractors

Liability that actually covers plowing and salting. Auto for the trucks with blades on them. The certificates your property managers want before the first storm. Placed by a licensed New Jersey agency that reads your contracts before it quotes your policy.

Send a declarations page or a client's insurance requirements. A licensed agent tells you what's missing. No obligation, and nothing changes on your current policy until you say so.

Six Coverages a Snow Contractor Has to Get Right

Read across each row. The right-hand column is the question to ask about the policy you have now.

CoverageWhat it pays forCheck your current policy
General liability →Injury and property-damage claims from your work: the fall on a walk you treated, the curb your blade clipped, the lawn you tore up at the lot edge.Does an endorsement exclude or limit snow and ice removal?
Plow truck auto →The trucks doing the plowing, the blade and spreader on them, and drivers who aren't you.Is a plow truck sitting on a personal auto policy? Is plowing a declared use?
Contractor's equipment →Blades, spreaders, pushers, skid steers and loaders: theft, collision, fire. Are leased or seasonal rental machines scheduled, and at what value?
Workers' compensation →Injuries to the crew: shovelers, salters, operators and seasonal hires.Does the payroll estimate include the winter-only crew?
Umbrella & excess →Limits above general liability and auto when one claim outruns them.Does it sit over both the liability and the auto, with no snow carve-out?
Contracts & certificates →Making the policy match what you signed: additional insureds, hold harmless clauses, waivers.Did you agree to defend the property owner? Does the policy follow?

Coverage depends on the policy's actual forms and endorsements. This table is a general guide, not a statement of any policy's terms.

Who We Insure

One truck or forty. If you push, salt or shovel for someone else in New Jersey, the exposure is the same shape: a contract, a property, and a pedestrian who wasn't watching their step.

How the Quote Works

One upload. We read what you already have before we ask you anything.

  1. Step 1Upload what you have

Your current declarations pages, plus any contract or insurance requirements a client sent you. Phone photos are fine.

  2. Step 2We read both

A licensed agent compares what you signed with what you're covered for and marks every gap in writing.

  3. Step 3Quote, bind, certificates

You get options from carriers that write snow work, and a certificate for each property once coverage is bound.

Your Contract Decides Who Pays

Most snow contracts ask you to name the property owner on your policy and to defend them if someone falls. If your policy doesn't say the same thing the contract does, the gap is yours.

Send us the insurance page of any contract before you sign it. We'll mark what your policy already does, what needs an endorsement, and what's worth pushing back on.

How contract review works →

What property managers ask for
  • Additional insured status for the owner and managerongoing and completed operations
  • Primary and non-contributory wording
  • Waiver of subrogation on liability, auto and workers' comp
  • Hold harmless that your policy treats as an insured contract
  • Minimum limits, often with an umbrella on top

Where We Write

All 21 counties, in six regions. A route in Sussex and a lot in Cape May are different winters, so each region has its own page.

Last winter averaged 37.8 inches of snow across New Jersey, the state's 12th snowiest on record and its snowiest since 2013–14. A season like that is a lot of pushes, a lot of salt, and a lot of exposure on every account you carry.

Questions Contractors Ask

My landscaping policy covers me in winter, right?

Not always. Some landscaper liability policies carry an endorsement that excludes or limits snow and ice removal. It's one line on the forms schedule, and it's the first thing we look for when you send your policy.

Can my plow truck stay on a personal auto policy?

Don't count on it once you plow for pay. Many personal auto policies won't respond to paid plowing, and Delaware's insurance commissioner warned in January 2017 that a personal policy "will not likely provide coverage" for it. A personal policy also carries no general liability for the slip-and-fall after you leave. We look at how the truck is titled, who drives it and what's mounted on it, then place it correctly. More on the owner-operator page.

How fast can I get a certificate for a new account?

Once coverage is bound, certificates are routine. The slow part is usually the wording a property manager asks for, such as additional insured, primary and non-contributory, or waiver of subrogation. Send the requirements early and we'll confirm the policy supports them before the season starts.

Who's liable when someone falls on a walk I salted?

It depends on the property, the timing of the storm, your contract and what you did and when. New Jersey courts look at all of it. The New Jersey Supreme Court's ongoing storm rule (Pareja v. Princeton International Properties, 2021) and its July 2026 decision in Gallardo v. Walmart both turned on timing. Our guide to New Jersey snow removal law walks through how it works. It's general information, so talk to your own attorney about a specific claim.

Do you only write snow work?

Snow and ice contractors are the focus of this site. Friedlander Associates is an independent agency, so if you also mow, landscape or do hardscape in the off-season, we look at the whole business and the policy can cover the full year.
